Fr. Barry Schoonbaert p.p.
Although I was born right here in Winnipeg, I was raised and attended grade school at Deloraine, Manitoba. After a couple of years with the Canadian wheat board as a market analyst I entered the seminary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I would receive my theology training at St. Peter’s seminary in London, Ontario. After ordination I served parishes in Virden, Dauphin, Brandon, and finally Winnipeg. Prior to being assigned to St. Vital in 2009 I served at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in. After 23 years a priest I continue to learn, grow and meet new challenges, first as person and but also as a priest. What brings me the greatest joy are the wonderful people God places in my life, they are what make the challenges all worthwhile!
Fr. Colin Peterson
Associate Pastor/Parochial Vicar
I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and after attending seminary at Vancouver School of Theology I was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada in 1978. I served two parishes in rural Manitoba, Miami and Gladstone and one in Winnipeg, Kirkfield Park, before becoming a correctional chaplain in 2001. I became a Roman Catholic at Easter 2011 and began a period of formation in preparation for ordination as a priest. I served an internship at St. Gianna Beretta Molla Parish before ordination to the priesthood on June 10, 2016. I am married to Sandy and we have three adult children and three grandchildren. I love being a priest and find great joy in serving God’s people wherever I find them. My interests include travel, cooking, photography, kayaking, fishing and sports.
Pastoral Assistant | (204-803-6556)
I first started in ministry in the Church in 2001 in the capacity of Youth Ministry Coordinator and my role has grown and developed ever since. I feel very privileged to be able to serve God in our wonderful and very diverse, ever-growing community! Prior to joining St. Vital in 2009, I worked in two other parishes in our diocese, Blessed John XXIIIrd and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (which also happens to the parish in which I grew up). I have two incredible children, and one of our favorite family activities is going on day-trip adventures.
Financial Manager/Assistant Director
I have been in the parish since I arrived from the Philippines in June 2009. I generally take care of the finances of the parish as well as our school and daycare. I value my Catholic faith and believe that God calls us to be where he wants us to be for His greater glory. I believe that God has placed me in this parish for a reason and I am truly grateful that I work here.
Religious Education | (204-890-5978)
My name is Candace Anthony and I have been a member of our parish since I was very young, and now continue to attend and serve in the parish with my own family. My role here in the parish is the Religious Education Coordinator, but I also do some work in our local community providing programs for parents and children. My favorite things to do are spending time outdoors with my family, whether its bike riding, hiking, or camping.
I was born and raised in the small community of Dunrea where I received my Catholic education from my parents and the Oblate Missionary nuns. I became a member of St. Vital Parish in 1995 and have witnessed many wonderful changes over the past few years. The opportunity to work in the Parish Office has allowed me to grow both spiritually and intellectually. I am truly blessed to work with such great people who I consider to be like family.
I have been assisting in the Administration department since September 2002. My duties include publishing our Parish bulletin, preparing the church for daily mass, preparing certificates for the sacraments and updating files for the Parish and St. Maurice School. As well, I am a proud parent of two beautiful children, I love spending time with my family and I enjoy painting and travelling.
I have been working in the custodial department for the parish, school and daycare for the past 10 years. My wife Isabel and I are both originally from Sao Miguel, Portugal. One of the highlights of my life was in 2008 when Isabel and I were able to take our two sons and our daughter-in-law to Portugal to see where we are from. I take pride being both a parishioner and an employee here at St. Vital.
