In a way, Jesus had some good news and some bad news for the Sadducees in the gospel today. They were the religious group who didn’t believe in resurrection after death. So Jesus’ good news for them is, “Guess what? YES, there IS an afterlife.” But the bad news from their perspective would probably be—there’s no marriage in heaven!
But that is only followed by Jesus’ even better news, that something even more wonderful than marriage awaits us in the afterlife. This is hard to believe for anyone who says, “What could be better than being with my sweetie?”
The energy and living vitality of the love we give and receive here will become “the substance of things hoped for” in the afterlife. And I believe we will share in all of the love relationships which have been the substance of life for millions of others. We will finally experience love from the eyewitness perspective of every plant, animal, and person who has received or given love in their lifetime.
I cannot begin to describe what that will feel like—a million nuclear explosions, times a million, maybe? Perhaps that is why every painter has given us a different view, every poet can only take on expressing a small sliver of that reality. And every believer has only their hope, and the love they give in everyday life, to rely upon.
This is why no expression of love is too small. No giving of love by any creature ever goes unnoticed by God. And no moment of love ever dies. That is why we know there is an amazing afterlife. Marriage will pale by comparison.
